Back on Track: Duke of Edinburgh
This term saw our final expedition from last years cycle of Duke of Edinburgh cohorts take place. Our Year 10 Bronze DofEers, who were denied their assessed expedition in July due to Covid, were finally allowed to complete their programme – and this time out the weather was perfect!
Based, once again, in the Chiltern Hills, the 5 groups of students completed a 2 day, 1 night expedition. Here, they carried all of their equipment and food (including, for one group, an industrial amount of pasta) and navigated round the surprisingly tricky landscape of the Chilterns; some of the footpaths no longer existed which posed obvious challenges! All completely unaided, they were also responsible for setting up camp in the evening, cooking a warm meal and packing everything away again first thing in the morning. Unlike their practice which saw some of the most inclement weather in recent memory, this expedition was carried out amidst the glorious Indian summer.
As such, this made for a thoroughly enjoyable couple of days and the sense of achievement for the students when finished was palpable. The pupils all did themselves proud and it was fantastic to see the levels of determination and teamwork that all of the groups displayed in abundance.
For this year, our DofE programme will run as follows:
Bronze – Year 9 (Year-Long enrichment option)
Silver – Year 10/11 Gold – Year 12/13
