Feathered Friends Return
The chicks have been a real hit with the children this term; they have been absolutely fascinated by their feathery friends. From the moment the eggs arrived, the children were excited to see the chicks emerge from their shells and couldn’t wait to cuddle them. We even made a temporary pond for them.
They’re cute and cuddly, but they’re also great for cognitive and emotional development. We bring chicks into the classroom to positively impact child wellbeing, encouraging pupils to practice conversation without judgement and socially interact with confidence, whilst teaching them all about the different stages of the life cycle.
The children have also learnt lots of new vocabulary throughout the project such as hatching, crack, incubator, feathers, hen and cockerel. During circle time our animal enthusiasts discussed the life cycle of a chicken and, with support from their teachers, they completed a life cycle collage. And let’s not forget the beautiful pictures of the chicks they painted too!
