STEM

Exploring, Questioning, and Creating for the Future

At NBH Canonbury, curiosity drives learning.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) are taught not only as academic disciplines but as ways of thinking – encouraging students to question, explore and problem-solve creatively.

Set within a school recognised for its research-informed approach and innovative use of technology in teaching and small class sizes, every student is supported to think critically, explore creatively, and understand how STEM shapes the world around them.

Science

Our Science curriculum brings learning to life through practical investigation and discovery.

Students explore Biology, Chemistry and Physics in fully equipped specialist laboratories, applying theory through hands-on experiments, project work, and collaborative enquiry.

In Years 10 and 11, pupils follow either the Combined or Triple Science GCSE pathway, guided by passionate teachers who tailor lessons to individual learning styles and ambitions. Whether studying chemical reactions, human biology, or energy transfer, students are encouraged to question, analyse and connect their learning to real-world contexts.

Regular participation in Science Olympiads and enrichment activities further deepens their curiosity, while cross-disciplinary projects such as Plants, People and the Planet connect scientific study with environmental awareness and wellbeing.

Technology & Engineering

Through Design and Technology, pupils learn to solve problems with imagination and precision – from developing sustainable prototypes to experimenting with materials and design processes. The creative cycle of design, test, refine, and reflect builds both innovation and resilience.

At Key Stage 3, all students study Design & Technology and Computer Science, gaining foundational skills in design thinking, digital literacy and computational logic.

From Year 7, pupils begin to code, handle data, and explore real-world applications of technology, building confidence for future STEM study.

STEM enrichment also includes Robotics workshops, where students collaborate to build and programme robots, combining creativity with technical skill.

Mathematics

Mathematics underpins every aspect of STEM at NBH Canonbury.

We focus on confidence, fluency, and application, helping students develop logical reasoning, numerical accuracy and problem-solving for life beyond the classroom.

Small class sizes enable tailored teaching and stretch opportunities for advanced learners through Maths Challenge entries, extension workshops, and peer-led problem-solving sessions.

This personalised approach ensures that every pupil can thrive – from those seeking extra support to those preparing for competitive STEM pathways.

Beyond the Classroom

Students participate in Science Club, Robotics Enrichment, and a range of STEM competitions, including national Olympiads and the UK Mathematics Trust Challenge. These experiences promote teamwork, innovation and self-confidence.

Our London setting provides exceptional opportunities for real-world learning. Students attend lectures at the Royal Geographical Society, explore cross-curricular themes through visits to museums and research centres, and take advantage of the capital’s rich scientific and cultural institutions to bring their learning to life.

Weekly enrichment sessions encourage exploration beyond the curriculum, fostering curiosity, creativity, and environmental awareness through projects like Plants, People and the Planet.

Our students achieve excellent GCSE results in the sciences, mathematics and computer science, often continuing to A-Level at our own Sixth Form before progressing to Russell Group and international universities.

Guided by teachers who combine expertise with genuine passion, every pupil is encouraged to pursue their own True North – discovering the spark that inspires them to innovate, think deeply and shape tomorrow’s world.
