Sixth Form Curriculum

Academic pathways that inspire

In the Sixth Form at NBH Canonbury, students engage deeply with subjects they are passionate about – choosing three or four A-Level courses from a broad and stimulating selection spanning the sciences, humanities, creative arts, and modern languages. This academic structure promotes subject expertise, critical thinking, and growing independence as students prepare for the next stage of their education and life.

Set within a historic Tudor building, just minutes from Islington’s vibrant Upper Street, our Sixth Form offers the space, calm, and academic challenge that bridges the gap between school and adulthood. Students enjoy greater autonomy while remaining part of a close-knit, supportive environment that sees and nurtures every individual.

Key Stage 5

A-Levels

In Years 12 and 13 (ages 16–18), students typically study three A-Level subjects, with the option to take a fourth depending on GCSE results and personal ambition.

We maintain very small class sizes at this level, which means we really get to “see” our students and provide a significant amount of one-to-one teaching. We prioritise developing a personal understanding of each individual student, so that we can best support them in every aspect of Sixth Form life and maximise academic success.

As well as their chosen A-Level subjects, students also study the Extended Project Qualification. The EPQ is an open-ended project which is equivalent to an AS-Level and is an excellent opportunity for students to learn new study and research skills as well as investigate a topic which fascinates them.

A-level students can select from the following subjects*

Sixth Form study is complemented by two Games lessons per week, one PSHE lesson per fortnight, and one double Enrichment lesson per week.

* Courses may vary in availability each year depending on uptake.

Personalised support

Each Sixth Former is assigned a dedicated tutor who supports their academic journey, wellbeing, and future planning. Tutors meet regularly with students and work closely with teachers to offer consistent feedback, study coaching and pastoral support, ensuring that each young person feels known, understood, and equipped to thrive.

As part of our commitment to understanding the needs of teenagers, we implement evidence-based approaches to wellbeing, such as later Wednesday start times to support adolescent sleep rhythms and provide students with personal devices to streamline independent study and revision.

Enrichment

A Sixth Form experience beyond the classroom

Academic achievement is just one part of the NBH Canonbury Sixth Form experience. Our students develop confidence, leadership, and character through a broad range of enrichment opportunities that stretch far beyond the classroom.

From leadership roles to creative, physical, and community-focused activities, students are encouraged to grow as people, not just students. Many take part in advanced art clubs, curate student-led exhibitions, or perform in music ensembles and whole-school drama productions – often taking leading roles or contributing backstage. Those with a passion for performance may also pursue LAMDA qualifications, building confidence, presence, and public speaking skills.

Physical wellbeing is equally prioritised. Sixth Formers enjoy access to a diverse programme of sports and fitness, including tennis, athletics, martial arts, and yoga, while also having opportunities to support and lead younger pupils in these activities.

For students with interests in advocacy, identity, or social impact, enrichment includes participation in Pride Club, debate societies, and student-led wellbeing groups, providing platforms to express ideas, raise awareness, and foster inclusive thinking within the school community.

Leadership and personal growth

Students are encouraged to take initiative and develop key life skills through a range of leadership opportunities. Sixth Formers often take on mentoring roles with younger pupils, organise House competitions, and lead charitable fundraising events. These experiences foster initiative, responsibility, and strong interpersonal skills – qualities that are vital in both university and the workplace.

Our students also have the opportunity to complete the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award, which combines leadership, outdoor adventure, and community service at the highest level. This nationally recognised programme encourages resilience and determination while broadening personal growth. Many students also serve as Student Wellbeing Ambassadors, leading mental health and peer support initiatives and contributing to the school’s inclusive, supportive environment.
