Recognising the paramount importance of careers advice in schools, we strive to equip our students with the skills and knowledge necessary to make informed decisions about their educational pathways, both within and beyond school, and to thrive in their future endeavours.

Last week, we were honoured to host Tim van Someren, one of the UK’s leading multicamera directors of live events, as part of our careers talk series at Senior Canonbury.

Tim not only shared insights into his successful career path but also offered invaluable guidance on essential qualities required to excel in the competitive TV production industry. His presentation delved into nuances of directing live events and drama productions, drawing from his extensive experience, from his formative years at MTV to filming renowned recording artists like Burna Boy, the Police, Paul McCartney, Alicia Keys and others.

During the session, Tim underscored the importance of dedication and excellence in the field, emphasising the need for resilience and adaptability in a rapidly evolving industry. He highlighted key skills such as readiness to learn, open mindedness, hard working as essential attributes for success in TV production.

Furthermore, Tim generously shared strategies for students to approach future employers, particularly for those lacking job experience. He encouraged them to craft direct letters showcasing examples of their work from school projects, effectively demonstrating their creativity, technical proficiency, and passion for the craft.

We would like to thank Tim for his invaluable contribution to our students’ professional development journey. His engaging discussion not only broadened their horizons but also instilled in them the confidence to pursue their passions with purpose.
